CALLING VOLUNTEERS EVERY 2ND SATURDAY TO
SOUTH PORTAGE BAY,  EARTH DAY SHORELINE WORK PARTY-
GREEN SEATTLE PARTNERSHIP    TEEN FRIENDLY

Project Mulching and removing invasive plants as well as miscellaneous debris from our park which is located at the beautiful wetland edge of Portage Bay. We supply tools and gloves for the work, but you may bring your own, too.  Snacks and drinks are provided. .

Meet at:            The park is located behind the Four Season's apartments off of Boyer Ave. East. on 15th East which dead ends at the park.

Habitat Restoration Project Receives Grant

A $90,000 Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Grant has been awarded the Friends of South Portage Bay. This money will be used to begin building phase one of the master plan.

Award Ceremony was Hosted by Seattle mayor Greg Nichols

at the Montlake Community Center

on Wednesday, July 18th 2007

 

A pledge drive will be underway shortly to raise the $32,000.00 cash match needed for the grant.

Two Fund Raising Events in the planning phase are:  

Sweet Scoop Ice Cream Party featuring exotic toppings for Sundaes, Fountain Drinks, and Adult Creamy Cocktails

Violin Recital and Cocktail Party

Space for these events has been generously donated by the Queen City Yacht Club

with Friends of South Portage Bay Reclamation

Your help really counts! 1600 plants
have been planted between November 2006 and April 2007

Volunteer contributions include countless hours of labor as well as financial donations by neighbors for plants and donation of a park bench by the owners of the Four Seasons Apartments, Nancy and Riley Pleas.

Many organizations too are contributing time, expertise and resources including:


  • Seattle Parks and Recreation  Department partners with us to oversee our work, provides resources for maintenance and assists in volunteer outreach
  • Green Seattle Partnership, a public/private partnership provides us with best practices guidance on removal of invasive species and assists with volunteer outreach and work party support.
  • Montlake Community Club and Portage Bay/Roanoke Park Community Council assists with outreach via their newsletters as well as with financial support toward purchase of plants
  • Starbucks Make Your Mark Volunteer Program provides invaluable employee assistance at many of our work parties. The financial match for hours of employee donatated time assists us with plant purchases and other park related expenses.
  • King County Conservation District has donated plants and provided planting assistance and expertise in the installation of 500 plants with the help of
  • Seattle Preparatory High School who, in their annual Ivy Out student volunteer work party at our park, helped install the plants donated by the King County Conservation District
  • Denny Middle School students and instructor Kirsten Rohrbach are propagating plants they recommended for our site from their Denny Wetland Nursery.We have received and planted several species.
  • Washington Native Plant Society has provided guidance in plant selection for our site helping us set a direction at the beginning of the project.
  • Puget Sound Keeper Alliance has partnered with us in our common goal of protecting local waters discharge of toxic pollutants. We assist in their annual cleanup of South Portage Bay shoreline.
  • REI is helping with volunteer outreach by naming us environmental group of the month.
 

                                       In the Works


Members of Friends of South Portage Bay Reclamation have been hard at work submitting several grant proposals to help futher goals for the park.  We are awaiting the outcome of three proposals:

          -  Five Star Restoration Challenge Grant for Montlake Playfield/Portage   
              Bay Restoration
          -  City of Seattle, Department of Neighborhood Large Project Fund
          -  American Hiking Society for a National Trails Fund Grant
